One of the things that added to the atmosphere of Sanliurfa was the pigeons. At certain times of days, they would fly and circle across the skies in groups. It was amazing to see and we would often stop to watch them. Who knew pigeons could be so beautiful.
Walking back to our hotel one night, we looked up and saw a line of pigeons sitting in a row on a rooftop and so Kristen stopped to take a picture. As she did, a head popped over ledge and saw our interest. Without hesitation he started waving us up, and before we knew it, he was down on the street inviting us up to his rooftop to meet his pigeons.
The experience was a highlight of our time in Turkey. It was also another one of those times on our trip where we really wished someone had invented the babel fish! We had so many questions but as we didn’t speak Turkish, we couldn’t do anything more than admire the birds and enjoy the experience with lots of smiles.
We stayed on the rooftop until we’d more than outstayed our welcome. The fun didn’t end there, as we were then invited in for çay and to meet the whole family. The experience only further cemented our view that Sanliurfa is a great town and the friendliest place on the planet.
Apologies for the quality of these photos. It was dusk, it was glarey and the pigeons wouldn’t stand still to have their portraits taken – not ideal conditions for photography.
