Our first full day in El Chalten we were upping our game and taking on the Laguna de los Tres trek, a 9 hour round trip that ends with excellent views of Fitz Roy. 25kms in total, with a total elevation of 750 meters – this was going to be a challenge. We left early, hoping to see the sunrise behind Fitz Roy. We made it to the mirador in time, but sadly no pretty colours today. But there are no complaints from us, as the sky was perfectly clear.
It was a magical walk with different views around every corner. For the first few hours we walked through woodlands, grasslands and along rocky streams.
Until we finally reached the last hurdle. A 500m climb which would take an hour up switchbacks and uneven rocks. It was tough and more than once we thought we’d finally reached the top, only to see another rise in front of us. But I can happily report we were up to the task, and the views once we reached the top were breathtaking. Literally. We both stopped to take in the sight before us, which were even more amazing than we had imaged. The majestic Fitz Roy was one of the most impressive sights we’d ever seen.
We quietly sat for a while and took in the views, treating ourselves to a gourmet lunch of jam sandwiches and small packets of dulce de leche, before setting off to walk around the lake and make the most of our time in the sky.
As we walked back slowly down the mountainside, aching all over, we both agreed that this had easily been one of the best days of the trip so far.
In a perfect end to the day, we stopped for an early dinner at the local brewery on our way home and had one of the best meals of our trip so far, topped off with their great beers and for Kristen, their huge glasses of wine. Just what we needed after such a long day.
A truly amazing experience.
